We know you are in the frenzy of holiday cooking when you google “How long does it take to bake a fully cooked ham” so let’s get to it.
First, it’s already cooked through and safe to eat cold so don’t stress like you would about getting a Turkey done. Okay, we’re a little calmer now.
Second, ham that you find at the grocery is fully cooked because it was smoked/cured. You would have to search specialty grocers to find an uncured, “fresh” ham to do your magic on. Am already smoked/cured ham is going to have a basic warming temperature and time per pound on the package. Do take note of the weight of your ham!
The basic rule is to bake your ham 12-15 minutes per pound at 325 degrees.
If you are adding a glaze at the end, you will want to turn up the oven to 425 degrees, glaze the ham and bake for an additional 15 minutes.
Bake until the internal temperature is at least 140 degrees. This is going to vary based on how you like your ham. Some people really love cooking theirs longer for that truly baked flavor. It is that sweet spot when the ham becomes less like deli meat and more like a roast in texture. But be careful because it can dry it out quickly! If you want more the roast texture, we suggest you slow cook it in a crockpot or at a lower temperature in the oven for longer.
What if you did not note the weight of the ham before you threw away the package?
Here are two kitchen tools that save the day. Buy them in advance because they are essential tools for so many things you need to cook at home!
A digital food scale with 33lb capacity, measuring grams and ounces:
This scale has 33lb capacity so you can weigh any ham or turkey. Food scales are so handy for the home cook for measuring out burgers, dividing bulk ground meat into 1lb portions for freezing, measuring ingredients in grams for sourdough bread or making macaroons and so much more. And they are an essential tool if you are on a special diet.
Weigh your ham on the scale to determine how long to bake it.
Also, we recommend getting a digital food thermometer specifically for food baking in the oven or on a grill:
This is what you are looking for. This one is pricey at around $50, but it has BLUETOOTH! If you do any grilling you will want to get this so you can use it on the grill and in the oven. Notice the metal cords that connect the probe to the unit. Those are heat safe. So you actually LEAVE IT IN the meat while cooking. You can use an app on your phone to constantly monitor the temperature. If you do any slow oven cooking or meat smoking on your grill this is essential! But if you just need something simple, click that photo above and get a lower model from this brand ThermoPro. Their products are the best!
Stick a couple of the probes in your ham at any point during the bake and you will know exactly when it is done! You can even sit on the couch and monitor it on your phone app!
You are on your way to a wonderful family meal! Baking a beautiful and yummy ham for your guests is easy and stress-free! Enjoy!
